1999 The Institution of Engineers, Australia Award for Excellence in Engineering Education (Formally the boeing Medal)

presented to Associate Professor Stephen Johnston, University of Technology, Sydney

Stephen Johnston has pursued educational excellence with a passion throughout his long and distinguished career in engineering education.

His intellectual and scholarly leadership has provided a stimulus for the reconceptualisation of engineering education and for the recognition of engineering practice as a legitimate field of academic study.

Much of Stephen’s scholarship is embodied in his pioneering text, ‘Engineering and Society: An Australian Perspective’.  This book has been hailed as a magnificent achievement.  It is outstanding because it provides a scholarly foundation for considering the interrelationships between engineering practitioners and the societies they both serve and lead.

Stephen’s contribution is exceptional because it has been in multidisciplinary areas that require complex thinking and synthesis of divergent viewpoints.

The Institution of Engineers, Australia award comprises a sterling silver medal, $5000 cash and a framed certificate.
