The Australasian Engineering Education Awards

The AaeE Engineering Education Excellence Awards have stimulated some outstanding applications in the last few years. While our Award criteria still generally matches the ALTC criteria, a few changes have been made to our Awards for 2010, details of which shall be posted here shortly.

2009 Award Winners

AaeE congratulates all of the following Award winners:

Teaching Excellence Award - Julie Mills

Julies claim for excellence in teaching is based on her nationally and internationally recognised expertise in the development of authentic project-based learning curricula in engineering; and in the area of equity as it applies to engineering generally and engineering education in particular. She has combined these commitments to PBL and equity in scholarly activities through publications, presentations, research and teaching grants.

Programs that Enhance Learning
  • Innovation in curricula, learning and teaching - PeerWise
PeerWise is an innovative web-based tool with which student work collaboratively to create a large repository of multiple choice questions with model answers, associated explanations, and related discussions. It was developed as a way to engage students in a large class (550 students) and focus their attention on the learning outcomes of the course. PeerWise was developed by Paul Denny, John Hamer & Andrew Luxton-Reilly at the University of Auckland.
  • Outreach services - UTS Engineering Links Program
The UTS Engineering Links program has been running for 10 years under the leadership of Betty Jacobs. It is an educational program that develops an up-to-date understanding of engineering both as a field of endeavour and as a career path in school students and their teachers from Years 5-12. The program links three groups of people: school students and their teachers; engineers on the staff at UTS; and engineering students at UTS.
Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in Engineering
  • Nicoleta Maynard: For demonstrating a broadly based high quality approach to teaching, curriculum development and educational research for enhancing student learning.
  • Les Dawes: For sustained commitment to the design, development and delivery of innovative and student-focussed learning experiences/environments that engages students in real world learning.
